Meet the members

We are pleased to continue Meet the Members, our interview series highlighting the people behind SEAP and the diversity of experience within our community. Today we present Ruth Daskalopoulou-Isaac, Director of EU Relations at the European Jewish Association.

1. Can you briefly introduce yourself, your current role and the type of organisation you work for?

My name is Ruth Daskalopoulou-Isaac, I am the Director of EU Relations at the European Jewish Association and work on advocacy, intercultural dialogue and international cooperation.

2. Why did you/your organisation decide to join SEAP, and what aspect of SEAP membership do you value most?

I was excited to join SEAP and value tremendously the support and insight the organisation gives in the ever-changing world of European Public Affairs, including promoting standards of ethical conduct and transparency.

3. From your perspective, what is the biggest challenge or opportunity currently facing the EU public affairs profession – and where do you see SEAP’s role in addressing it?

There are a lot of negative connotations regarding advocacy and lobbying, especially in my field, in what is known as “the Jewish lobby”. SEAP’s work on demystifying the profession and being a constructive, human and positive voice is really crucial.

4. What one piece of advice would you give to someone who wants to lobby effectively and ethically in Brussels?

Be honest, build relationships and give people the chance to know you. It is important not to stay in our own little bubble or political or ideological “corner”, but focus instead on building alliances and a wide network of colleagues you can work with and learn from.
